Glass – an incredible material
Sophisticated. Uncompromising. Radiant. Irresistible.
Searching and travelling – glass found me
“Glass is a state of positive tension, flexible and smart. Its molecules remain in motion, forming new shapes, following the flight of thought.” (Adriano Berengo)
I took over the foundations of my glass studio in 2008 from a glass artist in Worpswede. At the time, I was living on Rügen, where I set up my first studio. This marked the beginning of an intensive exploration of glass as a material, even though I had no previous experience with glass as an artistic medium.
By attending numerous courses with renowned glass artists, I gained technical skills while developing my own forms of expression. In the years up to 2024 I explored a variety of glass techniques, experimented extensively and created a wide range of work – from glass objects and jewellery to different forms of glass art.
The technique of Pâte de Verre has been a central part of my work for several years. It allows me to work with glass in a particularly delicate and direct way, giving structures, surfaces and light a central role.
Since 2025, I have been combining photographs with this technique to create distinctive glass artworks. Photographic images are transformed in glass and take on a new dimension through layering, material reactions and light.
“Trial and error” has been an important method from my earliest days to the present, helping me bring ideas to life with glass. I am just as interested in exploring nature, impermanence and the cycle of things as I am in the joy of experimentation.
On my many travels, especially in Asia, the beauty and fragility of the world, cultural differences, as well as loneliness and a sense of being out of place, come into focus in my work.
Glass leaves no room for error – it is unpredictable and can only be controlled to a limited extent. That is precisely why it is always exciting to open the kiln after a firing and discover how the material has transformed – surprises included.
