How we work:

1. The imprint of the baby feet and hands

To make glass sculptures of your baby’s feet and hands, we need an accurate impression of your child’s feet or hands. This is made using alginate, a plant-based material that is completely safe. Dentists, for example, use alginate to take dental impressions.
We can take a high-quality alginate impression of your child’s feet or hands at our studio or at your home (within Leipzig city limits). It’s very quick, as the alginate sets to a thick, pudding-like consistency in just one minute. The baby’s foot can then be removed with ease.

2. How the mould for the baby footprints is made

We pour wax into the cavity in the alginate, remove the resulting wax baby foot from the mould and refine it a little (for example, by removing small air bubbles). Next, we cast a mould around the baby foot using a heat-resistant plaster and grog mixture. Once the mould is ready, the wax is melted out, leaving a one-of-a-kind negative mould of your baby’s footprint. 
This method is called “Lost Wax” and is used in a range of artistic processes.

3. How long it takes for the Lieblingsfüsse to be ready

The specially formulated glass is then melted directly into the mould in the kiln at approximately 850 degrees. This process, including the long cooling period, takes about 5–7 days. Once cooled, the mould is broken away, revealing the glass sculpture with an exact impression of your child’s foot (or hand). Every object made this way is completely unique, as the mould cannot be reused.
The top edge is ground and polished, and then it is finally ready—the small work of art bearing your child’s one-of-a-kind footprint on that special day.

How long it takes

As creating your finished Favourite Feet™ is a complex and time-consuming process, it takes approx. 4–6 weeks to complete your order.
